Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge: Get advice from the judges.

A Note from the Head Judge

I thought a few suggestions might be in order. First, remember to keep your innovation simple, and explain the science involved. The judges will be looking for your ability to employ a very simple technique, using common materials found around your house to resolve a challenge that we all might experience in our own homes.

Second, focus on the word common or everyday. Most of us are guilty from time-to-time of suggesting that science is only for special people in special places. One purpose of your video should be to demonstrate that science and innovation can be a common, daily experience for everyone. The judges will not be impressed with your ability to incorporate fancy equipment or extravagant materials in your presentation. On the contrary, the judges will be impressed with your ability to use everyday items in an innovative manner.

Finally; remember this is a science communication challenge. We need to understand what you did, how it worked and what was innovative about it! You will be judged on how well you present yourself and your ideas. Do you comfortably engage your audience with clear, crisp explanations? Did you capture the imagination of your audience? Did your audience witness evidence of the scientific process in action?

Best of luck - I look forward to viewing your entries!
