Round 3 - The Restoration Challenge

Every year, cities and organizations spend millions of dollars to restore buildings, artwork and other public structures from damage related to weather elements, pollution, aging, vandalism, and other factors. For example, the Statue of Liberty recently underwent a renovation following a larger restoration project in 1984 where $86 million dollars was spent to return Lady Liberty to her majestic state. The process of restoration requires a delicate hand and the right science to remove the damage without further compromising the structure. Through the Restoration Challenge, the six top-scoring students were put to the challenge, carefully trying to restore icons of New York City. The finalists were challenged to devise and test a method to remove several graffiti/stain elements from a subway car panel and a representative piece of copper from the Statue of Liberty. There were hidden bonus points available in this round, as students uncovered and figured out how to remove a graffiti-proof film.
